SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

Common sense tells us that if we take from something, we need to put something back.

CALLCUT is a small, service-based consultancy. We don’t manufacture products, operate large premises or have a complicated supply chain.

But our size doesn’t remove our responsibility.

We buy things. We use energy. We travel. We use technology. We choose suppliers and services, influence other businesses through our work, and make decisions about what we use and what happens to it afterwards.

Our direct environmental footprint may be relatively small, but that isn’t a reason to ignore it. If anything, it gives us the opportunity to look carefully at the choices we can control.

Our approach is therefore quite simple: reduce unnecessary impact, make more responsible choices where we can, and keep looking for ways to do better.

We would rather demonstrate progress than make promises we cannot substantiate.

USE WHAT WE HAVE BEFORE BUYING MORE

One of the simplest ways to reduce environmental impact is to get more life from the things we already have.

At CALLCUT, repair, reuse and longevity come before replacement where they reasonably can. That applies to technology, equipment, furniture and the everyday things needed to run the consultancy.

It doesn’t mean keeping something indefinitely when it is inefficient, unreliable or no longer fit for purpose. It means resisting the assumption that new is automatically better.

When we do need to buy something, durability, repairability and future usefulness are part of the decision.

WHO WE BUY FROM COUNTS TOO

Our environmental impact doesn’t stop at the things directly within our control.

The products and services we buy have their own impacts, so purchasing decisions are another opportunity to make a difference.

Where practical, we favour suppliers and products that demonstrate responsible environmental and social practices. We consider provenance, longevity, waste, packaging and the availability of more responsible alternatives alongside cost, quality and practicality.

Not every purchasing decision will have a perfect option. The important thing is that sustainability is part of the decision rather than an afterthought.

ENERGY, TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL USE

Much of CALLCUT’s work is digital, but digital activity still has a physical footprint.

Websites, cloud storage, email, online meetings and AI all depend on infrastructure and energy. As our use of technology develops, so should our understanding of its impact.

We aim to use digital resources thoughtfully: avoiding unnecessary storage and duplication, keeping systems reasonably lean, extending the useful life of equipment and considering environmental performance when choosing technology and providers where reliable information is available.

We will continue to review this area as better evidence, technology and more responsible options become available.

TRAVEL WHEN IT ADDS SOMETHING

Remote working allows us to reduce unnecessary travel without reducing the quality of much of our work.

But not everything is better through a screen.

Workshops, events, collaboration and some client conversations benefit considerably from being face-to-face. Our aim isn’t to eliminate travel, but to make conscious decisions about when it genuinely adds value and how the journey is made.

Where practical, we combine journeys, use public transport and choose lower-impact options.

WASTE LESS

Reducing waste starts before something reaches the bin.

We aim to buy thoughtfully, use things for longer, repair where practical, minimise unnecessary printing and packaging, reuse what we can and recycle appropriately when something genuinely reaches the end of its useful life.

We also try to notice where waste is being created unnecessarily and change the behaviour or purchasing decision behind it.

That isn’t particularly glamorous.

It is, however, where a great deal of environmental improvement begins.

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS IS BIGGER THAN THE ENVIRONMENT

Sustainability at CALLCUT sits within our wider approach to responsible business.

Environmental impact cannot sensibly be separated from how people are treated, how suppliers are chosen, how decisions are made or how honestly an organisation communicates about what it is doing.

That is also how we approach our client work.

We don’t expect responsible organisations to be perfect. We do expect them — and ourselves — to be willing to look properly at their impact, make informed choices and take responsibility for improving what they reasonably can.

CALLCUT’s contribution isn’t only environmental. Volunteering and pro bono work form part of how the business contributes its time and expertise, alongside a pricing approach that recognises the very different resources available to organisations of different sizes and types.

For CALLCUT, responsible business means considering people, planet and commercial reality together, rather than improving one at the unnecessary expense of another.

WE EXPECT THIS POLICY TO CHANGE

We don’t regard sustainability as a finished piece of work.

Our consultancy will evolve. Technology will change. Better information will become available and our understanding of impact will continue to develop.

We will review this policy regularly and when significant changes occur in the way CALLCUT operates.

Where there are practical opportunities to reduce our impact or improve our approach, we expect to act on them.

And where we make a claim about what we’re doing, we should be able to stand behind it.
